Aseprite is a nice software application developed to help you create pixel art and edit animated sprite.
It offers brush preview, pixel perfect trace, RotSprite, tiled mode, countour and polygon tool, live animation preview, palette editor, etc.
You can save your animations into sprite sheets or texture atlases.
